Geriatric Mental Health: A Deeper Understanding
An online webinar on "Geriatric Mental Health '' was organized by PSCHY on July 25th,2023 that brought together experts from various fields of psychology and psychiatry to delve into an insightful discussion on the importance and effects of mental health in the Geriatric population.
The webinar comprised 300 plus participants including mental health professionals and students across India. A structured agenda was followed that covered a range of topics related to the theme .The presenters were a diverse group of experts, each bringing a unique perspective to the table.
The notable speakers included :
-Dr Sheeba Ninan , Assistant professor & Senior consultant in geriatric psychiatry , IMHANS, Calicut.
-Dr. Sojan Antony , Associate Professor , Dept. of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS
-Amala Paul, PhD Scholar, NIMHANS
Dr. Biju Sunny , Dept.of Psychiatry, MIMS , was the honorary chairperson to open the webinar.
Dr. Sheeba Ninan started the session through a detailed introduction to the depths of Geriatric Psychiatry , emphasizing on the various difficulties , ailments and disorders that could follow as a part of aging. A brief discussion on what can be termed “A healthy aging” was also explored .
Dr.Sojan Antony took over the session by showering light on the importance of home based care for the elderly , the concerns left unheard and extensively listed out various strategies that can be put into action to help the elderly at home. In addition to discussing the measure to be taken, Dr. Sojan emphasized on the significance of good mental health for the caregivers as well.
Miss. Amala Paul concluded the session through an intensive talk addressing the Non Pharmacological treatment methods of Dementia. Several holistic techniques, Cognitive methods and alternative strategies were presented and discussed.
One of the highlights was the interactive Q&A session, during which attendees had the opportunity to engage with the speakers directly which led to some thought-provoking questions being raised .
The webinar proved to be an enriching experience for all and provided a wealth of information and insights. It offered a platform for the exchange of ideas, exploration of innovative concepts, and the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field. The knowledge shared during this event will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and development of Geriatric Mental Health. A seminar on “Mental Health: A Right not a Privilege” was organized by PSCHY on October 18th with regard to the World Mental Health Day 2023 theme “ Mental Health a Universal Human Right ”. It was a remarkable event that brought together leading experts, researchers, and professionals from various fields united for the same cause. This seminar aimed to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and strategies to address the growing mental health challenges of our time.
It was a delight to have more than 300 plus participants for the Seminar which included students ,professionals and the general public. Our esteemed guests were from diverse groups who shared their opinions and insights for the same grounds.

Ms. K.K Shailaja graced the event by inspiring the gathering with her remarkable words , presence and support, followed by Dr. Anish’s informative and motivating Presidential address and the gathering was felicitated by Ms. Ajitha, Mr. Anees and Mr. Sonu with their exhilarating talk.
The expert talk on "Mental Health: A Right, Not a Privilege" was a resounding success. Dr. Milu Maria Anto”s insightful and compelling presentation shed light on the critical issue of equitable access to mental health care. It ignited a sense of urgency in addressing the disparities in mental health care provision and inspired individuals to take action. It is clear that the event made a significant impact in promoting the idea that mental health should be a right, not a privilege, and that it is a fundamental aspect of human well-being that must be accessible to all, regardless of their background or circumstances.
